Match Report

Match Report - 16 Dec 2012, Stalbridge Youth FC 15* beat Portland United

The hail showers cleared for a great game of football in the winter sunshine. Stalbridge started well creating some early chances for Cormac Wilcox and Jack Royle, set up by Louis Palmer, who combined well to provide numerous attacking opportunities. Stalbridge really distributed the ball from left to right through Sam Hopkins playing in defensive midfield. Persistence paid off with a run down the left from Isaac Stroud-Allen resulting in a goal which the keeper was unlucky not to save. Portland were physical team that didn't let Stalbridge trigger their passing game in the 1st half. Possession was overturned to create Portland attacks but Harvey Simpson played a solid game in goal keeping a clean sheet in the 1st half.

In the 2nd half Stalbridge really started to pass the ball well, playing it from the back, on the left and the right. Some great combination play from Will Coleman and Ollie Beaumont on the left created opportunities for Ollie to make his trademark runs down the wing which resulted in a 2nd goal. Whenever Stalbridge are ahead and are playing down the hill they sometimes get a little to focussed on pushing forward and losing their shape. Portland jumped on this opportunity with a piercing run straight through the middle which resulted in a goal. Stalbridge maintained their composure with Ben Siddell having a great game on the right, strong on the ball and putting in some great passes through to Kristian Javes. Kristian made some great runs and on another day would have got on the score sheet. With their heads up after scoring, Portland were creating more attacking opportunities. Many of these were dealt with by Matt Crosby and William Oswald but there were a few that got through and Jack Royle put in a great shift in goal making some spectacular saves to maintain Stalbridge's lead in the game. Stalbridge's passing game then opened up the Portland defence, who struggled with Isaac's pace, which resulted in another goal. Ollie Beaumont came charging down the left to score a carbon copy of his earlier goal. Shortly after Ben Siddell and Louis Palmer combined to put Isaac through to score his 3rd. The scoreline doesn't do the game justice as Portland really made Stalbridge play, but it was great to see the whole team step up to the mark and deliver a great result. Looking forward to more of the same in 2013. Happy Christmas everyone!
