Stalbridge faced a tough first game of the season away to Ilminster Town, but Stalbridge were confident going into the game on the back of a 7-1 away win in a friendly against Weymouth Warriors a fortnight ago.
Stalbridge started strongly and after 20 minutes were 1-0 up with a well earned, well worked goal. Rory put a great cross in, which Andrew met with a well timed finish. Stalbridge went into half time 2-0 up, after a fantastic second goal, the ball came from the back to Sam and the win, who put the ball in and Matt met it with a confident strike. Despite starting strongly in the second half, Ilminster managed to find a hole in our defence and scrambled the ball across the line making it 2-1. However, two minutes later Stalbridge found themselves 3-1 after a freak own goal where an Ilminster defender headed the ball over his own keeper and into the back of the net. Stalbridge decided to sit back at this point and take the 3-1 win; but shortly before the final whistle Bartek picked up the ball in the middle of the park and thundered a volley into the back of the net, scoring the goal of the day. A brilliant start to the season with a 4-1 win and fantastic individual performances by every player.
With many brilliant performances, choosing man of the match was particularly difficult but goes to Callum Morley for being consistently solid at the back, making every challenge and making no mistakes. Great job Callum, and great job everyone. Looking forward to Ash Rovers and home next week.
